Everything I Never Told You - Review by Emmie Vargas

Celeste Ng is mostly known for her very well-adapted "Little Fires Everywhere" which is streaming currently on Hulu and starring Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington. Little Fires Everywhere is not only the novel she has released. Everything I Never Told You is another novel she released in 2014 almost 3 years before Little Fires Everywhere was released. Everything I Never Told You is a mystery-thriller about a young Asian-American woman who was found drowned in a lake as her parents grappled with the fact that they couldn't save her. The plot details the mysteries of her death and the reflection that her parents are forced to face. When the truth is found it's something that is shocking and has more layers than meets the eye.

This plot is interesting but sort of predictable. The strong suit of this novel is the storytelling with family and their experiences and what brings them together. The mystery is sadly sub-par and I guessed the plot twist pretty quickly. That being said, I don't think it's that bad of a story. It's heartfelt and touching and the family dynamic is complex and intriguing. I would rate it about 3.5/5. Thank you for reading!

  1. Hi Emmie, it is kind of sad that the mystery wasn't developed to be more complex. A lot of times, all of the typical plot twists have been done already, and it's hard to create a new and original one.
