Heat by Mike Lupica - Review by Olisaemeka Allanah

12 year-old Michael Arroyo has the best pitching arm in all of Little League. Baseball is his escape from his real life, as with his dad leaving them to go to Cuba, it is just him and his 17-year old brother, Carlos. They have to keep this a secret from the Social Services or they will separate them into foster care, which is an option neither kid wants. As Michael continues to hit dingers and fire zingers, an opposing coach questions how a 12-year old kid can throw the ball so fast and so hard. The coach and along with other coaches, also suspicious of his age rally together and take it up to the Little League committee. So, they look into it and state that he will not be able to play, if he cannot show his birth certificate. With no birth certificate, no parents at his aid, and no defense, Michael is no longer allowed to play ball. Will Michael be able to play again or was he lying about his age all along?

Mike Lupica did a great job with Heat, like he does with his other bestsellers, Million Dollar Throw, and The Underdogs.  This book would inspire kids that want to make it pro to not give up, despite the circumstances. I would give this book a 10/10 for its interesting plot and characters, good length, and just being an overall engaging read.

  1. I've read this book before, and I agree with you entirely. I really like how short your blog is, compared to some of the other ones. The blog is clear and concise about the topics of your book, without giving away any spoilers.
